Kybella: The New Procedure to Tackle Double Chins and Fat Removal

If you have a double chin and want it gone, then this is the treatment for you! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Kybella in the United States. Kybella is a new non-invasive procedure for the removal of unwanted fatty tissue under the chin. Fatty tissue under the chin is a very common concern. People try many different procedures in hopes to tighten the skin in that area, though fullness often persists in the neck. It is important to understand that everyone has a naturally occurring anatomic “fat pad” under the chin that will become increasingly prominent as we age.

In the past, removing the unwanted fatty tissue has been through surgical approaches such as a surgical neck lift or liposuction. Now, Kybella offers a non-surgical approach to address this issue. The results from dermatologists currently practicing Kybella are very encouraging, as the fat removal appears to be permanent.

So, how does it work? Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella, which is found inside the body and is involved in the breakdown and metabolism of fat. Deoxycholic acid destabilizes the fat cell membranes, directly causing them to break and be absorbed by the body. The current procedure is based on mesotherapy, a widely used treatment that typically involved various active agents, such as vitamins and antioxidants that are injected into the fat lying under the skin.

Kybella will be available at Toledo Clinic Facial Plastics and Dermatology this Fall (2015)! Please contact us at Toledo Clinic Facial Plastics and Dermatology if you are interested in and/or would like to know more about this new and exciting procedure!
