Which is Better, Mineral or Chemical Sunscreen?
The truth is, one is not better than the other. Often, it is a personal preference as to which one you use. They both work in different ways to protect your skin from the damaging UV rays from the sun. Chemical sunscreen is made from organic, carbon-based compounds. When applied, it is absorbed by the skin. This process allows the skin to absorb the UV rays, convert them to heat, and that heat is then released by the skin. Mineral sunscreen is made from Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. These minerals work different from chemical sunscreens as they act as a barrier out the outer surface of the skin. The UV Rays are then reflected off the skin before they have a chance to make it to the skin and cause damage. No matter which form of sunscreen you choose, it is important to reapply as directed.
